Out of countless beloved traditional songs, we can surely say "When the Saints Go Marching In" is one of the best known melodies for all generations. Especially, Satchimo's (aka Louis Armstrong's) trumpet and singing is a hallmark sound of Dixieland jazz. Through it's often seen as a Dixieland song, it originated as a gospel hymn sung by African-Americans in the early 20th century south. While carrying a casket for burial, strolling bands might start with the blues song "Flee as a Bird" and "When the Saints Go Marching In" was played after the interment to celebrate loved ones joyfully going to Heaven. This arrangement reflects such sentiments. "Flee as a Bird" is presented mournfully as the melody of "Saints" begins. It then assumes a fast-paced Dixieland style, giving each instrument ad lib parts. The piece concludes with a grand big band finale. Since it contains New Orleans jazz, Dixieland jazz and big band idioms, musicians have an opportunity to learn about history, theory and style. The song concludes with Satchmo's famous line. (Toshio Mashima)
